There are three basic ways of getting from the capital capital city of San Jose to the town of Pavones.

Driving
Car rentals are available at the airport, or can be arranged for in advance through a travel agent. Pavones is approximately a seven hour drive from the airport.

Bus
Buses are also available from San Jose, this option though much cheaper does take several hours longer.

Flights
Several flights a day leave from San Jose to Golfito. Flights cost approximately $100 USD each way and can be booked through www.flysansa.com.

From Golfito
Once in Golfito there are several options to get to Pavones. Taxis cost between $60-70 USD and are a convenient way to go. Car rentals are available in Golfito. The drive (depending on road conditions) is approximately one and a half hours.
